At last we are here and have lasted more than 48 hours!
Arrived at 4am, on time with no hitches, delays or unscheduled visits to other countries. Our entry into Tajikistan went without any issues and we were met and taken to our accommodation for some well earned sleep. On Thursday morning we were met and taken to lunch in a local cafe where the borsch soup was delicious and just what was needed for breakfast. We then has a tour of the main sights of Dushanbe and in particular the green market, fascinating, very eastern outdoor fruit, veg and meat market - beats Tesco anyday ! We returned today for our weekly shop which cost us 30 somoni (about 6 pounds) we were accompanied by our Tajik language teacher who is trying her hardest to get us speaking Tajik - a rather difficult task as to learn a new alphabet at our age is difficult and the pronunciation impossible !
It is extremely cold with snow arriving on our second day taking the temperatures down even further, keeping warm when not moving about is really difficult so it was a great move to buy lots of thermal clothes for daytime and nighttime use. The heating in the house is not sufficient to keep the room warm and doing anything takes a long time. However, we are enjoying meeting local people who are very charming and friendly and have great respect for older people, which they seem for some reason to class us as. Alison's hair gets a lot of attention !!
Alison is looking forward to beginning her job on Monday and we will probably have more to say next time as we will have been here a whole week by then!

Tajikistan 'Round 2' or 'Here We Go Again'
Tuesday 11th January 2011
After a lovely, although unexpected Christmas and New Year at home, we are ready for another trip to Tajikistan. We leave on Wednesday morning 6.00am flight from Edinburgh to Heathrow, Heathrow to Istanbul and Istanbul to Dushanbe. This time we hope not to take the scenic via Tashkent but the direct flight to Dushanbe arriving at 4.00am.
Alison's arm is as normal as it will be and she has been discharged as fit to go. We are both excited and hope to stay longer this time. We may try for a week!!!!
We will keep you updated about what is happening, have fun because we will.
